Day Three of EVO 2013: THE FINALS!
EVO 2013 definitely had a year of the firsts. Persona 4 Arena and Injustice: Gods Among Us made their debut at the show, while Super Smash Bros. Melee returned after being away since 2007. The fans of Melee was a pretty big crowd, and they were ultra hyped up to see their game on the big screen.
The demographic for Melee was hard to not notice. It was definitely a younger crowd than those behind the other games. Needless to say, based on the atmosphere, Super Smash Bros. Melee deserved to be at EVO this year, and may come back again in 2014.
The finals that took place on Sunday were the following (in order):
- King of Fighters XIII
- Super Smash Bros. Melee
- Injustice: Gods Among Us
- Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
- Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition
During the finals, a few announcements were made. First, Martian Manhunter was officially unveiled as the next DLC installment to Injustice. The crowd did go wild, but not as much since it had been hinted at for weeks that he was going to be added to the roster. Then, before the UMVC3 finals, MadCatz made some announcements about Killer Instinct, and had a few individuals showcase the game in all its glory, including Assist Me!’s very own Maximilian.
Based on how the people showing off the game played, it looks to be that Jago is definitely the favorite of the game, followed by Sabrewolf and then Glacius. At the end of the trailer, the crowd got a teaser of an axe thrown at a tree — rumor is it that the fourth character to join the team is Chief Thunder.
It was funny to hear the boos coming from the crowd when Microsoft or the Xbox One was mentioned. There was even a comment from the crowd that said “Xbox One: turn on my PlayStation 4!” It was split down the middle as to the crowd’s opinion on the Xbox One, but MadCatz has a deal with Microsoft that it will make a fight stick exclusively for the console. Although the crowd did not seem to like that very much, MadCatz stated that when the PlayStation 4 hosts a fighting game, the company will make a stick for it as well — that quieted the crowd in a comical way.
The third announcement was the new Street Fighter game titled Ultra Street Fighter 4. Personally, I am all that is stoked for this game. I love playing with Poison in Street Fighter x Tekken, so it made me happy that she is coming to this new version of SSF IV.
Four fighters were announced, but Capcom said there will be five in the end. It was a little disappointing that the fifth never-before-added-to a-Street-Fighter-game character was not announced, so my eyes will be peeled for that reveal hopefully occurring in the near future. It seems as though Capcom is scrapping Street Fighter x Tekken, and just adding what it could from that game into this new Street Fighter game.
But it would make sense, since SFxT did not gain as much support from the fans as it could, possibly due to some DLC issues when it was released. Even the finals for this game, the finals at EVO, were tucked away in a corner while the quarter-finals for UMVC3 was streaming right up there on the main stage, so not many people were really caring about it. So I am not the least bit surprised if this game slowly disappears and is replaced with Ultra SSF IV. We shall see what happens next year.
Stay tuned for detailed thoughts and observations on the finals of EVO 2013!
