Microsoft: Xbox One Will Not Come With a Headset

Microsoft confirmed today that the Xbox One will not launch with a headset included in the box.

It appears that Microsoft intends for players to rely on Kinect for its “…highly sensitive multi-array microphones designed to enable voice inputs and chat as a system-level capability, both in-game and with Skype and other experiences.”

To be fair, including a headset was never really much of a standard for new consoles — the PlayStation 3 didn’t include one, after all — but it burns a bit more knowing that Sony confirmed a mono earpiece and mic as part of the PlayStation 4 launch package, never mind the fact that Microsoft immediately points to Kinect as the substitute.

A first-party headset will be available to purchase separately at launch, as well as the higher-end Turtle Beach and Polk headsets.
