G4tv to Become the Esquire Channel
In October it was announced that G4tv was canceling its video game programming and its flagship shows, X-Play and Attack of the Show.
It has now been officially announced, today, that G4 will become the television channel for Esquire Magazine.
According to NBCUniversal, this move was to appeal to the “more upscale sophisticated guy.” At the end of December the video game programming will officially end, and G4 will start to rebrand itself as the Esquire channel.
THR reported that the re-branding will “shift the former gaming network to a destination more in line with the modern male.” The goal will be to appeal to the “untapped metrosexual viewership.”
As programming is already being worked on, the gaming aspect hasn’t been forgotten. The new G4 will be a more upscale version of Spike TV featuring shows on fashion, cooking, style and, yes, a little gaming.
Only time will tell if this is a move in the right direction for G4, but one things is certain, we are seeing the end of an era and the birth of a channel that combines the likes of Spike TV, Bravo and G4.
What do you think of this move by G4?
