New York’s Nintendo Wii U Midnight Launch Party Recap
Approximately 800 fans waited outside of the Nintendo World Store in New York City Saturday night to usher in the Nintendo Wii U console. The crowd huddled together, danced, and even bounced some volleyball’s around to stay warm while counting down time until the new console’s official release.
Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America ‘s President and Chief Operating Officer, popped up here and there to give out swag, autograph merchandise, and just generally be harassed by everyone in the area.
Isaiah “Triforce” Johnson, the first person to purchase the Wii U
And like clockwork, the first person to purchase the Wii U was Isaiah “Triforce” Johnson, who was also the first person to purchase both the Wii and Nintendo 3DS. He started waiting in line on Oct 23rd. When I asked Johnson what he did during Hurricane Sandy, he told me he was “hardcore, but not, you know, Die Hard,” and went home. I’m not sure I’ll ever understand what he meant.
Thalia Jaca, who waited in line for a few weeks, showing off her I Mario NY T-Shirt.
On that note, the Nintendo World Store also unveiled “I Mario NY” shirts, of which all proceeds will be donated towards Hurricane Sandy relief. The shirts will be available at the Nintendo World Store location. The t-shirt, ZombiU, and of course, New Super Mario Bros. U were the biggest sellers of the night. Now if only I could get my hands on a Wii U.
