Dead Island Movie in the Works
Lionsgate announced today that it had optioned film rights from Deep-silver for Dead Island–a move spurred by the game’s extremely popular release. Rather then focus on action or special effects, it’s refreshing to hear that the film will focus on the emotional ties and struggles of the human characters.
Lionsgate’s co-COO and Motion Picture Group President Joe Drake made these comments about the upcoming film adaptation: “Like the hundreds of journalists and millions of fans who were so passionate and vocal about the Dead Island trailer, we too were awestruck.” He continued, “This is exactly the type of property we’re looking to adapt at Lionsgate – it’s sophisticated, edgy, and a true elevation of a genre that we know and love. It also has built in brand recognition around the world, and franchise potential.”
So it’s not going to be another Resident Evil? Awesome. Even better is the fact that they are actually thinking of focusing on acting and story line. Video games that become movies are almost always horrible. However, I do think that Lionsgate is taking the appropriate preliminary steps to ensure that for once the movie might actually be better then the game. The only big name attached to production is lead producer Sean Daniel (The Mummy, Tombstone, Dazed and Confused).
