Electronic Arts to Acquire PopCap

According to a press release, Electronic Arts will acquire PopCap, the developer of such beloved mobile titles as Bejeweled, Plants vs. Zombies, and Peggle. EA is laying down $650 million in cash, in addition to another $100 in stock to sweeten the deal.

PopCap’s stellar track record of making great games that are available on anything with a screen proved irresistible to EA, with CEO John Riccitello saying “PopCap’s great studio talent and powerful IP add to EA’s momentum and accelerate our drive towards a $1 billion digital business.”

This sentiment aligns nicely with EA’s Origin initiative.

The deal is projected to be finalized sometime in August, provided all of the paperwork goes through.
