Wanna Break Even on a PS3 game? Sell 500,000 Copies

If you want to be one of the in-crowd of developers to post a profit by selling games on the PS3, make sure it’s a blockbuster! Namco Bandai announced the amount of games they need to sell in order to break even, and it’s not exactly a small number.

“We have to sell at least 500,000 copies per title worldwide to make a profit on PlayStation 3 games, said Takasu. He said titles for the new Sony console are ‘selling well’.”

While 500k sales aren’t impossible, it makes sense of the recent rash of PS3 delays. Why would you release a game that needs to sell at least half a million copies when there aren’t that many consoles on the market?
