Indie Watch: Cuphead

The best way I could describe Cuphead is a brilliant blend of two different mediums of gaming and animation. This classic run and gun action game is inspired after 1930’s cartoon shorts. “Inspired” used here is an understatement. The team at StudioMDHR hand drew the characters and backgrounds. Implementing traditional cel animation and recording their original jazz compositions live give Cuphead that authentic 1930’s flair.

StudioMDHR 1930’s animation inspiration is an excellent choice. Animation was a place to experiment. If you are not familiar with animation in the 1930’s, cartoons had very limited censorship. Animators can be set there cartoon anywhere (see Disney’s Hell Bells) and characters can do almost anything like smoking (see Disney’s Woodland Café). From what we have seen from Cuphead trailer, we could expect the game’s levels to have a variety of locations and Cuphead and Mugman to have a variety of weapons in their arsenal. Check out the boss trailer below.

Cuphead is expected to hit the XboxOne and PC this Spring.
