Blizzard Announces ‘Reaper of Souls’ Expansion for Diablo III

The first expansion pack to Diablo III, Reaper of Souls, has been revealed by Blizzard during Gamescom 2013.

In Reaper of Souls, the fallen Archangel of Wisdom, Malthael, returns as the Angel of Death. He steals the Black Soulstone which imprisons the spirit of Diablo, and now players are tasked with tracking him down before he puts the stone to use.

The expansion set will introduce a new character class: The Crusader. The Crusader is a melee-focused tank who utilizes a “wide range of cruel and punishing weapons” as well as magic drawn from the Light. So, in a way, much like the classic Paladin.

Reaper of Souls will add a fifth act to the Diablo III storyline, and raise the level cap to 70. New spells and abilities will be added to the existing characters. Reaper of Souls “also accentuates the key features of the Diablo franchise, with a greater emphasis on randomized environments to explore; epic new quests; horrific new monsters to defeat; and substantial updates to the loot experience, enabling players to further customize their characters with new and improved multilevel Legendary items, new Blacksmith and Jeweler item-crafting options and more.”

The expansion will feature improvements to the loot system, and will provide new missions, monsters and more importantly two new game modes. Loot Runs and Nephalem Trials will help give Diablo III even more re-playability.

“From the beginning, Diablo has always been about the struggle between good and evil, and Reaper of Souls explores the darker notes of that conflict,” Mike Morhaime, Blizzard CEO, said. “This expansion also represents a big milestone in the ongoing evolution of Diablo III, with key enhancements to the core gameplay, along with a new act to experience, a powerful new character class, tons of new loot, and even more end-game options. We think players will love playing Reaper of Souls, and we can’t wait to get it into their hands.”
