Microsoft: Kinect No Longer Required for Xbox One to Function

In yet another surprising reversal by Microsoft, the company revealed that the Xbox One will no longer require the Kinect to be connected in order for the console to function.

Talking to IGN during the site’s “Ask Microsoft Anything About Xbox One” segment, Xbox Corporate Vice President Marc Whitten revealed that the Kinect no longer needed to be tethered to the console. However, certain games that require Kinect will not work without the Kinect attached.

“Games use Kinect in a variety of amazing ways from adding voice to control your squad mates to adding lean and other simple controls beyond the controller to full immersive gameplay,” Whitten said. “That said, like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn’t plugged in, although you won’t be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor.”

Some of the functions that will be lost when the Kinect isn’t attached will include voice commands and player recognition.
