Wii U Basic Being Phased Out?

With E3 2013 right around the corner, and the rumor mill pouring out on Xbox One and PS4, it seems that Nintendo is taking a measure to reduce the amount of SKUs it produces, and is phasing out the 8 GB version of the Wii U.

According to Kotaku, a leaked image from Gamestop shows that starting on June 18 all unopened Wii U Basic models will be recalled and are to be shipped back.

Is it a sign of a struggling system, or an attempt to lower the amount of SKUs on the public making choices easier when choosing a platform?
