Xbox LIVE Adds Free Service ‘Popcornflix’ to its Supply of Movie Apps
Free is always better, right? The Xbox LIVE dashboard hosts quite a few apps, most of which are accessible via paid subscriptions. The app known as Popcornflix is looking to deliver its own brand of free entertainment.
“Xbox LIVE opens up an entirely new audience for Popcornflix,” said David Fannon, executive vice president of Screen Media Ventures, LLC. “We are launching movie exclusives specifically for those viewers.”
So, what’s the catch? The application delivers movies free of charge. However, the system is ad based, so expect to see them infiltrating your viewing space. The service promises to provide “30-40 additional feature length films” each month, which is a great option for those who are looking for something else other than the Netflix experience. The menus are navigable with the Kinect sensor, allowing you to watch movies with the wave of your hand, Jedi.
After checking out the application, don’t expect huge releases to be found here. The app is segregated and organized for all types of movies stemming from the Screen Media company, a movie distributor. There aren’t as many recognizable movie titles, but the service is a viable option for those not wanting another subscription fee docked taken out each month. And hey, it’s free.
