Ni No Kuni Release Surrounded by Controversy
Whenever Studio Ghibli’s name is attached to something, people perk up and listen. The masterminds behind brilliant animated features (“Howl’s Moving Castle,” “My Neighbor Totoro,” etc.) teamed up with Japanese developer Level-5 (Professor Layton series) to create a title on every J-RPG player’s list.
Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch stars a young teenager named Oliver who, with the help of a cute little male fairy named Drippy, discovers a world parallel to his reality. In true Ghibli fashion, Oliver embarks on a journey to save someone that he has loved and lost.
With every great game there is typically a stellar collector’s edition. Ni No Kuni is no different. The ‘Wizard’s Edition’ of the game includes an actual print copy of The Wizard’s Companion, the in-game spell book. It also comes with a plush version of Drippy and some exclusive downloadable content that can be used to aid Oliver on his quest. Unfortunately, there were not enough ‘Wizard’s Editions’ to go around–even if you have already placed your order.
Expectant gamers were met with strife as they learned, due to a glitch on the Namco Bandai end, the copies of the Wizard’s Edition oversold resulting in canceled orders and pissed off fans. Ebayer PlayCanada got his or her hands more than 200 copies of the coveted set, which Namco Bandai quickly responded in regards to the seller and system error. It was also noted that the seller purchased the sets during a promotional time period when there was no limit on how many games could be acquired. Here is a portion of that statement:
NAMCO BANDAI Games America would first like to acknowledge our fans that will not be receiving their copy of Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch – Wizard’s Edition. This situation is truly unfortunate, having come about due to a glitch within our E-commerce provider’s ordering system. NAMCO BANDAI Games America continues to monitor the situation and is actively working with our E-commerce provider to offer remedies to each and every order. We are also working to ensure that a situation like this never happens again. We respectfully ask for our fans’ patience during this time.
NAMCO BANDAI Games America is not, nor has it ever, worked with or in conjunction with the eBay seller known as “PlayCanada” to sell units of Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch – Wizard’s Edition at a price premium on eBay.
According to our records, this individual or group of individuals purchased Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch – Wizard’s Edition during the NinoStarter promotion period (August 2012); at which time, no limits were placed on how many units an individual could order.
PlayCanada’s claims that they officially worked with NAMCO BANDAI Games America to obtain their stock is entirely false.
Fans with canceled orders will receive a $20 clubNAMCO voucher, a 400-page hardbound copy of the Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch strategy guide and an exclusive code to unlock a familiar within the game.
