Zombies Return in Call of Duty: Black Ops II

Pretty much everyone who has played the most recent Call of Duty games have a beloved affinity for Zombie Mode, that team-based survival mode where gamers gun down endless waves of Romero-esque walking undead.

With Activision’s recent reveal of zombies returning in Call of Duty: Black Ops II, gamers around the world rejoice in the news of being able to return to that havoc-filled arena. But it won’t just be the survival kill-fest that gamers are familiar with: Treyarch has revolutionized the gametype, labeling it Black Ops 2 Zombies and bringing three new modes of play each with their own distinct goals and gameplay styles.

With a distinct grindhouse horror feel and that signature old-fashioned style, the new Black Ops 2 Zombies mode really is like living through a Hollywood zombie film. Oh, and there’s more blood than a splatterhouse B-movie.

The newly released trailer for Black Ops 2 Zombies mainly shows off gameplay from the new Tranzit gametype wherein players are allowed to travel from one location to another and defend each area as they complete new objectives. Transportation is by bus–as seen in the video–that zombies relentlessly pursue, eager to make players their next meal.

Along with Tranzit, a new game mode called Grief introduces a whole new competitive edge to the fan-favorite mode. Grief features up to eight players split into two teams who compete to survive the endless waves of zombies. This new mode is similar to the traditional arcade-style survival action, adding a competitive twist where gamers work together to outlast their opponents.

Additionally Treyarch has reported that they will be utilizing a ton of new features like integrated stat-tracking, online leaderboards, and custom games in Black Ops 2 Zombies. The stat-tracking will be in-depth and provide a way for gamers to evaluate their overall skills with certain weapons and define their playing styles, adding a new level of interactivity to the game.

Custom Games within Black Ops 2 Zombies is another exciting feature that promises to add a ton of replayability and fun, adding a host of new customizable options including setting specific objectives like “Headshots Only” or choosing which round to start at in each gametype. This allows players to definitively customize their gameplay experience and create their very own Zombie Mode.
