PAX Prime is the Place to be for Final Fantasy
Who knew that PAX Prime was going to be ground zero for the celebration of the Final Fantasy series? Well, if you don’t know–now you know, know.
The Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) will be taking Seattle by storm once again, but this time it is bringing with it a 25th anniversary of a certain game filled with fantasy. Okay, it’s Final Fantasy’s 25th Anniversary. Surprise. While the main celebration for the game is taking place in Tokyo, Japan, there is still something quite special happening for those attending PAX Prime.
The event will be titled “Experience FINAL FANTASY” and will be held Friday, August 31 on the first day of the expo. The event will kick off in the ACT Theatre and go from 1:00PM to 9:00PM. Square-Enix has also invited the masses to come celebrate the franchise and its longevity in gaming. The event invites the public to come out and put their mitts on the promised “dozens” of playable units available in the theatre. This will hopefully mean a slew of retro consoles along with many current-gen ones playing side-by-side in harmony.
Aside from the already awesome display of gaming consoles, the event will be filled with opportunities to win some cool swag. Did someone say custom FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 branded PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360? These two consoles and other plush characters will also be in the mix. Those who attend will also receive a 25th anniversary poster featuring Yoshitaka Amano’s (Illustrator and character designer for the Final Fantasy series) artwork.
Now, if that didn’t make you blow your Chocobo Whistle, then maybe a video showcasing the future of the games storyline will. Near the end of the event there will be a special video message from creators Yoshinori Kitase (Producer), Motomu Toriyama (Director) and Isamu Kamikokuryo (Art Director) in regards to the direction Lightening’s story. But wait, there’s more.
Much like the Zelda series showcasing its symbolic music with a full orchestra, the same will be done for one night only for the Final Fantasy series. Taking place at the Akoo Theatre in Chicago, Illinois, the event will bring together the already enchanted music of the series and with the help of the Chicagoland Pops Orchestra. The project is titled “25th Anniversary Distant Worlds: The Celebration” and will be held Friday, December 7th. If you are closer to the west, then you’ll be happy to know that the music of Final Fantasy XI will be brought to the Zellerbeck auditorium in Berkley, CA. This event is titled the “FINAL FANTASY XI: 10th Anniversary Concert” and will be held Saturday, September 22 at 8:00PM.
It is great to see a series span the generations of consoles, but to also provide such a depth in storyline that it has made an imprint on gamers everywhere. Whether it is the celebration in Tokyo, Seattle, or Chi-town—it’s all about the fantasy. Unfortunately, that also means you can’t still squeeze into that Cloud costume you made years back. It’s embarrassing. Just make a new one and we’ll call it a day.
