Amalur Developer 38 Studios Hit by Layoffs

We liked Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, developed by former Major League Baseball pitcher Curt Schilling’s 38 Studios. It was a game that embodied the old school design of RPGs; something that has been left behind in recent years. We really looked forward to seeing the next installment of this promising series.

Unfortunately, it’s starting to look like Reckoning will end up being the company’s first and last game.

Late last week it was revealed that the Rhode Island-based studio missed employee payroll. It was also reported that the company paid the Economic Development Corporation $1.125 million in overdue funds after failing to pay the EDC earlier in the month, defaulting on an annual loan urgent payments granted in 2010.

As a result of this financial nightmare, 38 Studios has been hit by layoffs. It is unknown how many employees have been affected by the cuts, but one thing is known for sure, the studio is in trouble.

We will have more on this latest news as it updates.
