Marvel vs Capcom 2 iOS Review (iPad)

Back in 2000, Capcom released an arcade cabinet that would change the fighting genre.  Marvel vs. Capcom 2 removed fighting rounds, perfected tag team gameplay, and developed a fast and frantic gameplay that was simply addicting.  To say Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is a classic would be an understatement.  The game’s popularity and staying power is unparalleled, being released on majority of the home consoles, young and old, since its initial release over a decade ago.

Capcom is testing the new waters with Marvel vs. Capcom 2.  A port has been released on a mobile device for the first time.  Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is now available on Apple’s App Store for iOS devices running 5.0 or greater.  With the initial announcement of this classic fighting game coming to iOS devices, we some concerns.

For example: How would the controls suffer, if any, from the touch screen?  How would the frantic and fast gameplay translate to a device where the gameplay and controls share a screen?

With the recent release of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, it would have been easy for Capcom  to release those ports.  However, Capcom made an interesting choice to release the Dreamcast, PlayStation 2 and Xbox port.  Back is the classic introduction video with the theme “Can I Take You for a Ride.” The Secret Factory is back allowing players to unlock additional players and colors to earn the full-56 player roster.  The choice to release the older version allows this port to have more reply value compared to the newer releases.  The Secret Factory focuses the game towards a single player experience while the marketing for the XBLA and PSN version was the online multiplayer.

The biggest change of the game is the touch controls.  Capcom offers two control schemes as well as allowing you to build a custom one.  The default control scheme is a simple four-button format in which you have a punch, kick, special and assist button.  Hyper Combos and Team Hyper Combos are done with a quick swipe of the assist button.  This button configuration would be preferable for new players.  However for veteran players, this control scheme seems odd and unfamiliar.  Playing the game on this control scheme does not carry over the Marvel vs. Capcom 2 feel.

The second control scheme has all the familiar buttons.  The configuration has the low and high kick and punch button along with the two character assist buttons.  The Hyper Combos and Team Hyper Combos are all done with the classic control set list.  Just like the console versions, Team Hyper Combos can be executed with a swipe of the two assist buttons.

The button layout is similar to other Capcom iOS games.  This layout works well for slower games, but for a fast and frantic game like MvC 2, the layout of buttons on the gameplay screen itself is distracting and can get in the way.  Luckily Capcom provides a screen orientation layout options.  The Compact layout changes the gameplay screen to the middle of the device, putting the buttons off of the gameplay screen.

The most unfortunate issue regarding this port is that it suffers from frequent lag and slowdowns during the gameplay, which greatly affect the game; it is just not as fast and frantic as the prior incarnations.  Ultimately it simply does not feel like the Marvel vs. Capcom many gamers grew up with, or the excellent HD port that was released last year.   As a result, the game suffers greatly on the iPad.  The game also does poorly in the graphics department and features heavy pixelation.

Final Truth:

Not much can be said about Marvel vs. Capcom 2 that has not been said already.  The game is a classic for both causal gamers and hardcore gamers alike.  For Capcom’s first attempt to release MvC2 on a mobile device, they did an OK job.  The game suffers from control issues, lag, pixelated graphics, and gameplay slowdowns that affect the experience, but on a brighter note, in the past Capcom did do a good job of fixing these types of issues with updates on other iOS games.  Let’s hope Capcom releases an update soon.
