Mario Tennis Open Sounds Like a Ball
Platform: Nintendo 3DS
Release Date: May 20, 2012
Developer: CAMELOT Co., Ltd.
When it comes to sports games like tennis, it is hard to add more to make it appealing to non-tennis players. I mean, what are you going to do, add Goombas? Precisely.
Mario Tennis Open sounds like it is going to make full use of the Nintendo 3DS console. Bring you Mii onto the court and dress them down in Mushroom Kingdom attire. This isn’t just for aesthetic purposes, but it also gives your character stats that can be useful in the game. Some of the equipment boasted are such things as Bowser’s Racket and a Bullet Bill outfit.
Speaking of Mushroom Kingdom, there is also a mode titled Super Mario Tennis. This brings in traditional levels in the Super Mario Bros. series while serving up aces and volleys.
The game is also looking to add multiplayer to the list of features. Players can jump online and battle it out in single matches or jump in with friends. I’m glad that they are also incorporating three different play styles in the game. Use the buttons, stylus and touchpad, or the motion controls to lay down the racket.
I’m not kidding when I say that this sounds like one of the most fun Mario Tennis Games to date. I might have to put down my Virtual Boy for a few matches online. And once again Nintendo, thank you for not dropping the “3D” into the title.
