Kinect Zumba Fitness Rush Review

When I did the review for Zumba Fitness a little over a year ago, I knew it would only be a matter of time before we saw a second game head our way. We now have Zumba Fitness Rush, also known as Zumba Fitness 2 on the Wii platform. There are only a few things that changed in this follow-up for the Xbox Kinect, but a lot has remained the same, and not all of those are solid choices.

Zumba Fitness Rush is just what you would expect if you are familiar with the music-based exercise routine: fast paced dancing to Latin and Reggae music. Each song is broken down into different difficulties: Easy, Medium and Hard. The harder songs are longer in length an require a great deal of movement and placement of the moves. Following the on-screen dancers is imperative to the amount of points you can accumulate. At the end of each song you will be given a grade based on your point total and are also given a “Total Calories Lost” stat. Now you are able to keep track on the amount of calories you lose for every song you dance to.

The Kinect reads the movements very well. Much like the first game, you must follow the dancing silhouette during the routine. Unfortunately, like the first game, the on-screen instructions are next to nonexistent. You will have to base your dance moves almost entirely on what your instructor is doing. We even found out that you almost have to be facing in the same direction.

However, the Kinect does not pick up other objects in the camera’s point of view very well, so I was able to perform the routines cleanly, or as best as I could while eating a pizza all at the same time. My son was able to jump in front of the game’s main performer and perform moves cleanly and all he was doing was jumping around, so I do not think the camera was a hundred percent accurate when it came to performances, however it did keep you active and moving to a rhythm, which is the whole point of Zumba to begin with.

The game’s multiplayer component works well enough. You can play again with up to four players and, if you have the space, you can do two players at once. The Xbox LIVE functionality does tend to work out best, much like the first game. You have the freedom to move around by yourself against an online silhouette of your dance partner. Yes, this is in real time. Much like the first game, everything is color coded for you to let you know if you are playing well or not. Green is always the positive color while yellow means you are semi-performing correctly and red, of course, means you’re just not in the groove.

Final Truth:

We here at the gamingtruth review team have tried to Zumba Fitness Rush for four hours, and let me tell you, we gave it our all and we burned a lot of calories. If you were lucky enough to catch us live on JustinTV then we are sure you caught one hell of a hilarious show. Editors Shawn, DJ and I enjoyed our time with Zumba and it made for an interesting game night. My only complaint for Zumba, besides the lack of dance instructions would be the menu system, the game, again, lacks the fluidity of a solid menu system. We found it very difficult to select a song because the menus continued to shift from left to right inadvertently. If your looking for another solid exercise game that picks up where you might have left off with the original, then Rush is a solid choice for you.
