A Look at Heroes of Ruin for Nintendo 3DS

One of my favorite games on the Nintendo DS was Phantasy Star 0, which was a loot-based action RPG. The main draw to the game was character customization and online play. With up to three other players, you could venture out to areas with differing degrees of difficulty and search from rare weapons and items while combating ferocious beasts. Heroes of Ruin reminds me a lot of that game, which is a good thing. The game is being developed by n-Space (Call of Duty series on DS, Geist) and published by Square Enix, which gives me high hopes for this title.

Releasing late spring/early summer, Heroes of Ruin is a game based on customization and freedom. You choose what class of character you want, outfit them, give them weapons and explore the lands before you. The main gameplay element is looting, which is the quest to gain more items, weapons and clothing to enhance your character. Over 80,000 different items are available in the game, which allows for total player control of what sort of character they want to develop.

A game like this is fun by yourself, but even better when you are able to quest with others. Thankfully, this game features four-player local and online co-op. One of the nice features is the available to join and drop mid-game, which allows for quicker sessions if needed while not interrupting your teammates. The game will also support voice chat via the 3DS built-in microphone, which adds a great level of strategy.

n-Space seems to have all the bells and whistles attached to this title, with a Diablo-like experience in the palm of your hand. A solid graphic engine rounds out this title, which looks to be a big hit. The one concerning thing is the lack of a solid release date, but I’m hoping that’s related to polish and not quality issues. Be sure to check back with GAMINGtruth.com upon release to see our review for the game. In the meantime, enjoy the trailer and screenshots.
