Double Fine Productions Will Take Your Money…and Make Magic
Double Fine productions (Pyschonauts, Brutal Legend, Costume Quest, Stacking) is looking to create a game that stands true to the phrase “for gamers, by gamers.” The company itself is utilizing Kickstarter, which, to say the least, is a funding program for creative endeavors. They are looking to fulfill the pledge of USD 400,000 in order to bring them one step closer to building a game, for you. Well, that’s at least what Double Fine Founder Tim Schafer promises.
The money comes directly from backers, who will then be given special access, if they choose, to the final product. They will also have the joy of watching it all unfold as it is filmed by 2 Player Productions. If the pledge is not met, the game simply does not get made and no money changes hand.
At this point, the game’s pledging system is damn near complete and it looks like they will reach their goal sooner than the March 13th, 2012 deadline.
This is something that will not only give more players a say in the final outcome of a game, but it will do something many game companies only wish they could do–and that is to cut out the middle man. Digital distribution of titles is becoming more popular and the end result is often a cheaper price for the consumer. After all, the game has to be created, printed, and then distributed to a retailer in order for you to drag yourself down to the store to purchase. Most of the time it also leaves out any feedback that future players of the game may have since it already is a hard copy.
