In With the Old, Out With the New

Here at GAMINGtruth.com, one thing we all love is retro games.  The majority of the staff have their own personal collections of games and systems and play them often.  We encourage our readers to step away from the new, just for a little bit, and go back to the games that made modern gaming possible.  However, the GAMINGtruth staff understands how difficult that could be sometimes.  Not everybody saved their older gaming consoles and, unless you score at a yard sale or thrift store, buying older consoles and games could be pricey.

However, developers have been re-releasing some of their classic games.  This time, you could play on the go, anytime you want.  No, it is not on a Nintendo DS or a PlayStation Vita or PSP.  Surprisingly, a number of these classic games can be played on iOS devices.  Apple’s App Store has a number of retro games available at a cheaper price than you will find for the console version.

Every week, GAMINGtruth.com will highlight one of these games no retro gamer and iOS device owner should not be without.

This week: Capcom Arcade.

Remember the days when you could drive to your local arcade to get your gaming fix?  I do and Capcom does as well.  Capcom Arcade is free to download through the Apple App Store, however it does require some in-app purchasesCapcom Arcade starts you off with 10 free tokens.  You can only carry 10 tokens at a time and tokens are sold in a pack of 10 for $0.99.  Each cabinet requires one token to play.  Instead of purchasing tokens, you have the option to purchase individual cabinets for unlimited play for $0.99 as well.  If you are an enthusiast retro gamer as much as I am, you could purchase all cabinets for unlimited play for $9.99.  With this price system in place, it feels like being back at an arcade.

Capcom included majority of its classic games.  The games list includes:

  • Commando
  • Ghost N’ Goblins, Ghouls N’ Ghost, Super Ghouls N’ Ghost
  • 1942, 1943
  • Street Fighter II, Street Fighter II’, Street Fighter II’ Turbo
  • Final Fight
  • Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
  • Magic Sword

The $9.99 price for unlocking all cabinets is a steal considering digital version of these games can be found on Xbox LIVE Arcade or PSN at $5 a piece.  The stand out of the list is Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo with the digital version of the game on other consoles priced at $14.99.

All of the games are faithful ports from the arcade cabinet.  The games will cheat, spam and cheap-shot you in attempt to “eat your quarter” Thus another reason to consider the $9.99 price point.  The fun of the arcade comes souring back and leaves you wanting to pay another token to continue.  The touch controls are responsive and they do not get in the way of the action due to the games keeping the original 4:3 aspect ratio.

Rather you are at work, school or have some time to waste Capcom Arcade is a must have retro game to be part of your iOS game library for your arcade gaming fix.
