UFC Undisputed 3: Demo Impressions
Platform: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3
Release Date: February 14th, 2012
UFC is one of the biggest sporting events in the world as of late, and there have been no shortage of games. THQ is releasing UFC Undisputed 3 on Feb. 14, 2012 in the US, and the company has graced Xbox LIVE and PSN with a beefy demo to show what’s new for the series.
First thing everyone is talking about is the addition of PRIDE fighting, which was huge in Japan. Instead of just adding a new rule set, THQ has pretty much made two seperate games in one. PRIDE has it’s own rings, announcers, commentators, rules, character models and attires, and atmosphere. It’s a pretty impressive feat and is a welcome addition for fighting fans. There are lots of new move additions, including leg KOs, fast mounts after a big shot, and one hit KO’s have been redone and improved.
The controls remain mostly the same from previous entries, with your face buttons as your strikes, and using trigger buttons to block or modify the strike. The new addition is the right analog stick being used to control take downs and do all your ground grappling. It works rather well after an initial adjustment period. The presentation is absolutely astounding, and it feels like you are watching a UFC fight live. The character models are very detailed, and the model damage is very impressive and brutal looking as well.
I do have some gripes with the demo however. As with all of the previous UFC games, some of the animations feel entirely too fast and not fluid. The game tends to feel a bit arcade-y at times as well, which has always been my biggest gripe in the series and is why I enjoyed EA: MMA so much. It looks like a real live event, so I feel it should play as one. Hopefully THQ will one day add an option to tweak the game damage so that it plays more like what you see on TV. I understand that making it a hardcore UFC sim would turn off some people, but I look at it as any other sport. You have Madden which is your realistic sim, and you have Blitz for the arcade fans.
All that being considered, UFC Undisputed 3 is a very solid game that will make MMA fans very pleased. All of the new additions really make this more of a new game then just a roster update which a lot of sport titles tend to feel like eventually. Get your bandages ready, because come Valentine’s Day UFC Undisputed 3 will be knocking you out!
