Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Preview
Platform: Nintendo Wii
Release Date: October 24, 2011
Players: 1-4 co-op story
It only took nearly the full life span of the Nintendo Wii to fulfill what most gamers wanted out from the console in the first year of launch. First party games are what made the company what it is today and that is, for some, the reason that they continue to purchase Nintendo products.
Regardless of even my current taste in games, it is hard for me personally not to indulge in the experience and story for characters like Mario, Link, or Donkey Kong. There are quite a few epic heros on that roster that have returned over the years. One of those famous characters just happens to pink puff that can inhale garbage and turn it in to gold. That character is of course none other than Kirby.
While the title was formerly known as Kirby Wii, his return to Dreamland is something that can only be expected from this notorious shape shifter and his continuous attacks from the mean ol’ Whispy. From veterans to rookies, do not worry, this is one story for veterans and rookies alike to enjoy.
In this story, we find our hero on the hunt for mysterious pieces of an alien ship. The otherwise quiet location Planet Pop Star is shaken up by the mysterious crash and it is up to Kirby to find the missing pieces of the visitor’s ship. Giving players the ability to journey through Dreamland is great for newbies and fans of the series over the years. Classic moves make their returns and some new features add value to the familiar style of play. This effort is further complimented by the co-op system that is in place, which allows up to three others to join in on your crusade.
At any time during the game, others can jump in as Meta Knight, King Dedede, Waddle Dee or a different color Kirby. This is something that we got a taste of during Kirby’s Epic Yarn and other titles like Super Mario Bros. Wii. There is a wonder if the “zooming” aspects that we saw in Super Mario Bros. Wii will be as prevalent of a factor in this title, or if it will keep the standard close up view of all the action. Although this is a great feature, Nintendo has confirmed to GAMINGtruth that this will be local only co-op.
Although the local only co-op might be a letdown for some, we will be seeing new features that will hopefully fill your little hearts with excitement. While players will have access to classic moves from Kirby, we will also be seeing a few newly added ones to the roster.
The new “Super Abilities”, which you can see in the trailer here, allows for Kirby to display some electrifying moves to take out enemies and solve smaller puzzles. If you are too lazy to click the link, “Sword” Kirby wields a monstrosity of a sword and draws it in the efforts to slash a giant rope in order to progress in the level. These same types of moves can also be used to wipe out a screen full of baddies. Other powers will help you take on larger enemies with over the top Kirby power.
With the many other Nintendo titles out this year, and other hotness dropping on various platforms, it will be tough to pick just which ones you will blow your bills on. Hey, who needs two kidneys, right? For me, it will be a question of buying, borrowing, and begging. For Kirby, it’s worth the effort.
