Rumor: Wii 2 Announcement in June
As E3 is coming in June, it seems to be rumor time for the video game industry. Today’s latest: a new home console is going to be shown by Nintendo this June.
Video game magazine and website Game Informer has spoken to multiple sources to confirm the announcement. From what they have gathered, the console is going to be capable of displaying a high-definition Mario and Link. Sources were mixed on just how powerful the system would be however, with some saying it would be more powerful than a PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and others indicating it being less powerful. Website Kotaku said it heard the system will be “more powerful than current-gen systems.”
One Game Informer source said the new system is “not a gimmick like the Wii,” and that “Nintendo is doing this one right.”
This is an interesting statement considering Nintendo does well with innovation and crazy ideas like touch screens and motion controls. Perhaps this is a return to the GameCube days or Nintendo has something else up their sleeve. Improved tech power would help them to regain third party publishers and multi-console releases the Wii just can’t handle.
Nintendo is also reportedly showing off the system to publishers to get them on board, and the release date has been rumored to be late 2012.
E3 starts on June 7, but an announcement could come from Nintendo during a press conference held before the event begins. If this announcement does materialize, Nintendo may have one of the best shows ever with announcements of new 3DS games and a new system.
