Is Piracy Killing PC?

It is becoming more and more apparent these days that Internet piracy is becoming the nail in the coffin to the PC gaming market. Some game publishers are trying to cut down on internet piracy by implementing different techniques, but sadly enough only Blizzard has been “some-what” successful at weeding out those pesky pirates. Links at Bittorrent have been sky high since the early part of this century and stats have proven that console-based games, that used to be successful PC-based games are performing at a ten-to-one rate. So to say that PC games suffer from internet pirates is an understatement. Lets take a closer look at some BitTorrent Stats. Even though these stats are three years old, you have to envision that the PC market hasn’t gotten any better, and the fan-base for these franchises has grown tremendously:

Looking at these stats is a little staggering. Coming off the heels of what happened with Crysis 2 the past weekend, it is proven that pirates are killing the PC market. It is more cost effect to move development from a PC build to a console build, since console pirating is easier to control, even though it still happens. Do you think that torrent-based websites should be held accountable for the loss?

Yes. Not only should they be held accountable, but they should be shut down.

Piracy is something that kills an entertainment medium. Look at what happened with the music industry and the movie industry. More and more, CDs and DVDs are getting copied illegally day after day, and now a days we are seeing more and more digital copies of CDs, movies and now video games. This still poses the problem of piracy, but looking at the success of iTunes, and Steam, it seems that we are moving in the right direction for PC gaming.

(Steam is the Benchmark)

I’ve heard the arguments from “pirates”: “Oh, video games are getting to be more expensive so until publishers start reducing the prices, pirate on”. This seems to be one of the most despicable comment I could have possibly found. PC prices are cheaper than console games now a-days, and hell, even engines such as Steam and Good-ol’ Games offer excellent games at a really cheap price. The GTA franchise for $19.99? Are you kidding me?

One thing is very clear, pirates hurt the industry as a whole. If you are a fan of PC based gaming, do the rest of us and the developers a favor and purchase the game legally. If the PC market crashes, and your not able to play Call of Duty, or other popular franchises on PC again you will have no one to blame for it except for yourself. As an enthusiast I like to see the industry and publishers strive. Support them and the industry by just being honest and respectable.
