Expect a plethora of Pokemon in 2011
As if Pokemon needs a marketing campaign. Apparently, Nintendo thinks the pocket monsters should get one, and this year will see a lot of Pokemon in everything from film, T.V., trading cards, a mall tour and action figures.
This multi-million dollar marketing campaign is tied to the release of the new DS games, Pokemon Black and Pokemon White.
“The release of Pokemon Black Version and Pokemon White Version gives us the opportunity to launch brand-new entertainment that our existing and new fans will love,” J.C. Smith, director of consumer marketing for The Pokemon Company International, said. “Every major pillar of the brand including video games, T.V. animation, feature films, and the Pokemon Trading Card Game will see exciting changes throughout the year.”
A new animated television series is planned for Cartoon Network, as well as a feature-length film: Pokemon-Zoroark: Master of Illusions. The film will air on Cartoon Network on Feb. 5, followed one week later by the premiere of two episodes from the new animated series — Pokemon: Black and White — on Feb. 12. A new trading card game expansion — Pokemon TCG: Black & White — is scheduled for release in April.
The Pokemon Black Version and White Version Tour will make the rounds at major malls beginning Feb. 5. The tour will last over seven weeks, and will offer a first look at the new video games and offer Pokemon related activities.
Character distributions will be offered throughout the year for both video games at select retailers across the country — GameStop has already started offering special versions of past legendary Pokemon for already-released DS titles that will result in the appearance of Zoroark when transferred to Black and White.
And finally, new Pokemon licensed merchandise will be offered to drain gamers and collectors of their cash. JAKKS Pacific is lined up to launch a Skill & Action line of toys for older kids, collectible figures, plush characters, play sets and “Trainer” role play items inspired by the T.V. animation series.
Pokemon Black and White for the Nintendo DS will be in stores on March 6. I will be purchasing it and taking a week off of work.
