Yakuza Creator Announces Binary Domain
Perhaps as a response to SEGA’s inability to crack the Western market with Yakuza and its Japan-heavy theme, they decided to come out with a game that would tickle the West’s fancy. And what do Western gamers like the most? Why a sci-fi themed shooter of course! Why have a mature adult-centric game with gripping narrative and a dark story of honor, betrayal, and justice when we can just go shoot some s**t?
Coming from famed Yakuza director, Toshihiro Nagoshi, Binary Domain is set in the year 2080 where human soldiers are fighting for the survival of humanity in the robot-invaded streets of Tokyo. During the game, players have control over a squad of all your favorite stereotypes including: the gruff, hot-headed white guy with a hidden past, a large black man with a bad attitude and a bigger gun, says “fool,” and, of course, the super sexy female soldier in tight clothing with a “I can do anything a man is capable of” demeanor.
As they fend off the mechanized menace, one question rises above the smoking battlefield: “Are the robots becoming more human, or are humans becoming more like machines?”
“What I wanted to create this time was a dramatic and energetic sci-fi shooter. When you hear sci-fi you may think of cold, clinical environments but with Binary Domain I wanted to combine this with a deep human drama,” commented Toshihiro Nagoshi. “The keyword we have in mind for this project is ‘Life’. I wanted to make something that will be accepted by both the Japanese and Western markets, and this fundamental theme is something everyone knows but which the full extent of can be difficult to grasp.”
The game promises to have an advance and innovative A.I. system that will change how players tackle each fight. Each move now must be planned with strategy if they want to overcome the machines that make the hostile environments even more dangerous with their new abilities to respond to the player.
“We are excited and proud to have Toshihiro Nagoshi working on Binary Domain,” said Gary Knight, Senior Vice President of Marketing at SEGA of Europe and SEGA of America. “The game is being developed in Japan yet it is designed for a global audience and will take players into an exhilarating story wrapped into a unique, action-packed shooter experience in a fresh new setting.”
I’ve been grumbling, yes, but don’t get me wrong. Nagoshi has a penchant for great storytelling and with him on the scene I am confident that the game will still be worth playing. The story, as what I have picked up from the official trailer below, seems to echo other classic epics such as Bladerunner, Ghost in the Shell, and Deus Ex where the question of what truly makes something human is the primary theme. It’s just a shame that SEGA and Nagoshi have to create a game that we have all played too many times before just to get the attention of Western games.
