This year’s summer of arcade seemed a little lackluster as opposed to last years massive lineup of “Trials HD”, “Shadow Complex”, ” Marvel vs. Capcom 2″, and “Splosion Man”. But then “Monday Night Combat” was released much to the delight of third person tower defense fans. Monday Night Combat is just as I said, a tower defense third person, Team Fortress style game. The game is like a massive, twisted game show where your main objective in the blitz modes is to protect your money ball, which bots are sent out in abundance to destroy it. Killing the ever increasing difficult bots earns you cash, which you can use to upgrade your character, or build and upgrade 4 different types of turrets. You have the option to build Rocket, Laser, Long Shot and Slow down turrets. This title does focus very heavy on strategy and spending your money wisely, because what you build, where you build it does make a difference. You can choose between 6 different classes of characters, but choose wisely, because once you choose a class you must play with that class for the blitz game you choose. You have the assault class, which is assault rifle heavy, and very good at setting traps. The Tank is your heavy class that can withstand a lot of damage. He has a number of abilities that help him regain his health fast, and withstand more and more damage, even though he is slow, he is one of the fan favorites. The assassin is a very fast moving, dangerous class. Keep in mind that even though their offense is very high, their defense is the lowest and can die very often. They can cloak and backstab their enemies, and can dash attack to do more damage. They also have a secondary throwing blade weapons that give them long range attacks, since the assassins are melee attackers. The Support Class is a medic. He can heal the turrets if they take damage and can also use their medic beam to harm the enemies by draining their life. They also have a very nice hack special that can increase the range and damage of turrets. The Gunner is much like a tank but has a lot of ammo and high damage, but move very slow. They are probably one of the least played classes. The final is the sniper, which is very effective from a distance but, much like the assassin has very little health. They can one to two shoot kill a bot with no problem, but in crossfire mode, their worst enemy is the assassin. Crossfire mode is a deathmatch game that pits you and a team of 6 others against another team of 6 to fight to the death.
Monday night combat looks very good, using the Unreal Engine in a very positive way. The game moves fluid and very seldom see the frame rate drop. My only complaints about the game is that there are no maps to play on but 1 for the blitz modes and 1 for crossfire. The co-op works great but there is just not enough variety to the game. Also after every completion of a blitz match, you can not choose a different mode or adjust the settings without quitting to the main menu and starting over. Yes that means you have to re-invite your party. There are some balancing issues, because the Support class is overpowered and the assassin is a bit overpowered as well. The gunner class to me is a wast of a class, but the fact that you can actually create your own custom classes with the money you earn in the matches is a very sweet addition.
Monday Night Combat is a very nice addition to the Summer of Arcade on Xbox and is fun and each game will play different, especially if you play with different people each time. The game is very strategy focused and will keep you entertained every time you play. The game is refreshing compared to a lot of game that I have played as of late and hope they add much to it through DLC over the next few months.
