If you’re like me, and you walked into a retail store and you look at the new release section and you see games like NCAA Football 2011, Crackdown 2, Red Dead Redemption (even though it came out a few months ago) and then you see Clash of the Titans, all of which are priced the exact same, $59.99, you have to ask yourself, “It’s got to be better than the movie Right”? Well in some aspects yes but in a majority of it, NO. The game is set in the time periods of Greek Mythology where you as the player are immersed in the fight between humans and the Gods Hades and Zeus. This is an action adventure game that lets you take control of Perseus’ as he fights demons and travels through lots of different landscapes from the film in an effort to bring down Hades and Zeus.
First off, we all know that Hollywood and the video game industry have had a horrible track record in movie to video game renditions, and vice versa. This game further solidifies that by adding the shovel wear these systems have been handed from Hollywood. The game is a typical Hack and slash game with mindless puzzles that are more annoying than anything throughout. It tries a little to much to stretch the mythology that God of War had already tapped and achieved on a much bigger scale. God of War was pure mythology, and a puzzle hack and slash, where the puzzles themselves took some thought and actually meant something to the story. This game takes what God of War had achieved and broke it into several pieces. Although the game is longer than most others in it’s genre, it plays a little to much on repeat. It has the play, rinse and repeat effect. The bosses will vary and will do so consistently, the games pawns will always remain the same and never seem to increase in difficulty as you progress.
The game is not all rough seas, as the weapons, and combat are not terrible. You can map your weapon selection to your D-Pad and each weapon does have small light attacks and Heavy attacks. Your sub weapon, which is the mapped weapon of your choice, that you also earn by killing enemies who wield them with the game’s quick time attack combos. The QTE’s are actually impressive to watch, and can leave you feeling empowered, for a few seconds at least. If you are also a fan of Greek Mythology you may also enjoy some of the games characters, such as Medusa, Zeus, Hades, Athena, and the Kraken! I just am one reviewer who feels that the God of War series did this so much better as a story telling aspect, but with that said the game does follow the movie plot lines fairly well, but again that is not saying much. Also the inclusion of off line co-op is a very nice addition, so you can actually fight along side another human player instead of the miserable AI partner.
The game does get problematic from it’s slow progression and endless fights that feel a lot like fillers to keep the game going longer than it should have been. It feels like the game should only be a 8 to 10 hour game but will drag you along for a solid 20 + hours in repetitive battles and seamless story telling. AI is terrible and seems to loose focus of you at any given time a QTE occurs. when attacking enemies I noticed that frequently the enemy will remain turned, with his back to you through the entire battle if you keep light attacking him repeatably. It also seems that if there are other enemies on screen the frame rate drops and becomes jittery. In closing this game is for sure not worth the $60 price tag given to it. I have a strong feeling you will begin seeing this game in bargain bins very soon. Is it better than the movie, Yes because you can actually fight Medusa, and the Kraken, but it still suffers from the Hollywood/Gaming curse that has been plaguing the industry for years.
