Deadliest Warrior: The Game, review
Dedliest Warrior: The Game, from Pipeworks and Spike Games, gives you a chance to relive your childhood and see what it would have been like for your Apache Warrior to take on your swift and deadly Ninja. Here is your chance to take on some of the deadliest warriors. Here are the 8 characters, in no particular deadly order; Ninja, Spartan, Knight, Viking, Samurai, Pirate, Apache, and Centurion.
Deadliest Warrior has its moments, but I do think there could have been some room for improvement. My suggestion is that if you are a fan of the show, it might seem like a great deal for 800 MS points. Or if you have any extra lying around then use them here! Steer clear if you were expecting a Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, mixed with Killer Instinct type game. Authenticity is a must for this bloody battle.
Some of the best parts about the game are its authenticities. The weapons make for great character traits and the attributes for each body type ties very well into whom they are and era they represent. The Apache keeps a very “native” feel and balances his knife movement and speed for blocking and escaping. Other characters like the Spartan utilize his shield for blocking long distance shots and maintaining balance. Now its time for the day old question, “balance, strength, or speed?” In most cases, it might not even matter.
One of the things that you will notice right off the-bat is that the button response is not the greatest. Having your Apache scalp handed to you is something that might happen often, but is not easy getting used to. Dismembering your opponent in the next round does give the opportunity for redemption and is very fulfilling, especially after he chopped off your head in the first.
Although the characters may be balanced well, when entering into combat, the balancing seems to not make a difference for any button mashing you may do. It takes a back seat to the many times I was left thinking, “really?!” and yelling “C’mon!” The Knight may hit you at a long distance and then again at medium range while you don’t even have the chance to side-step. This can get a little frustrating at times while trying to manage your stances. The right control stick becomes more powerful than the block or parry, but suffers from the lack of movement in a moment that could end up costing you, well, an arm or a leg.
Another thing that I find is that the camera and character movements are not always fluently satisfying. There are a ton of crucial moments throughout the match when button timing is everything. Combinging the Y,X, and A buttons gives you combos and moves that can tack on to one another. There is even an achievement for 10G if you can pull it off to parry and escape with the right timing chemistry. Although it may swing positively in your direction, one false move can leave you with you painting the dirt with blood.
For example, the Knight made a move at my Ninja character. Parrying the first attack and then rolling out of the reach of his blade. The quick moves left the Knight facing with blade-drawn, while my back was turned to him. I might have well just had a stab here with an X on my shoulder blades and spine with directions where to insert sharpened spear. There was no moving away from the attack and the Knight moved in for a frustrating kill. At least the finishing move was epic and full of redness.
