MORTAL KOMBAAAAT – New clip [UPDATE]
Not long ago, Warner Bros. mentioned that it wanted to do a reboot to the Mortal Kombat movie franchise. Other than a 2013 release date at IMDB, nothing much has surfaced since then.
But earlier this morning (11AM still counts as morning to me), Kotaku’s Mike Fahey posted a video clip that definitely seemed like a Mortal Kombat movie clip. I think….
BTW the above video is NOT kid-friendly. Unless of course you have no qualms about “raw bacon” face eating.
So here’s my take: A mutant-baby, head-eating, Reptile? Baraka is a doctor who mutilated himself somehow for some reason other than he’s just screaming batsh*t crazy? Jax is now Jacks? What the hell is going on?
I really don’t see this as anything movie-related in the slightest. For one, the clip is too damn long. No producer worth their salt will ever run nearly six minutes of dialogue from one character just to hype a movie. Movie trailers also have warnings before the trailer and credits after. Also, the way the Ja(x)cks announced all the characters, especially Sonya Blade, makes it feel more like fan service than anything else. Mostly movies will announce characters during the film, not all at once. This can’t be a movie.
Instead, I believe that this is the promised series reboot that Ed Boon promised some time back. The timing also works: we are less than one week from E3 so why not hype the fans a little? It makes sense, right?
A part of me is really intrigued. As a Mortal Kombat fan I have been eagerly awaiting any type of news about the next game. Watching the clip, I’m definitely interested in what is in store. A serious and, obviously, uber violent Mortal Kombat game might just be what gets me back into the fighter genre. But since I’m a fan, there is a part of me that is reeling. I’ve always liked many of the franchise characters and seeing them now so different upsets me some ways. Especially Scorpion who now, ugh, has a face. Watching Johnny Cage get killed though, priceless.
Beyond that, I am definitely gong to be on the hunt come E3 next week for some bacon-delicious MK info. If there is any.
[UPDATE]: Collider.com has revealed the truth behind the mysterious MK viral video. Apparently it is a concept pitch for the upcoming MK movie. Here are a few details from the interview:
