Rockstar Steps Up Their Game

by

You’d think that Rockstar Games had their hands full with Red Dead Redemption coming out next month and everything, but they’ve been busy. Two cool games dropped yesterday, and they’re not playing around. First up…

Red Dead Redemption: Gunslingers

If you’ve ever spent time on Facebook games like Mafia Wars, Epic Crime Wars, and any of the other social games, you’ll feel right at home with Gunslingers. To start off, you get to choose between three classes, then take your action to the towns. Sharpshooters have better accuracy, Fast Hands has the best draw time, and Outlaws have the best damage. Once you’ve done that, you either duel other ‘Gunslingers’ gamers or get into Shootouts with friends who don’t have the app yet (which is the invite system).

The best feature about Gunslingers is that the action just doesn’t happen behind the scenes. When you agree to a duel, you get shown a video of how the battle played out. It’s a pretty cool way to fill in the blanks of the vast majority of these types of games, that’s for sure!

As a bonus, if you have a Rockstar Social Club account you can link your account and get an extra 25 skill points and have the upper hand! Since I spend time on Facebook from time to time, I’m sure this will be a great time sink.

After watching how good this is, though, it makes me wonder if Rockstar Games will be following up this fantastic showing with an iPhone app. If reasonably priced, I’d pick it up!

GTA: Episodes From Liberty City

Now I couldn’t forget about the 400-lb gorilla in the corner. GTA: Episodes From Liberty City, which contains both the “Ballad of Gay Tony” and “The Lost and the Damned” expansions, is now available at both retail and digital download for both PlayStation 3 / PlayStation Network and Games for Windows Live.

If you’re on either one of those systems and have yet to experience the joy of these expansions, I’d highly suggest picking up the ‘Episodes’. You won’t be disappointed! Just to tease you of what you’re missing, check out the trailer:

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is multi-colored, has a lot more sparkle, and some cool functions such as ‘Mixview’ that let you rapidly see associated collections, tracks, or other users related to what you’re playing. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, permitting you to navigate around exploring by related artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you come across other people with shared preferences and becoming buddies with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are hearing, which can also be enjoyable. People worried with privacy will probably be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening routines in the event you so choose.
