Mass Effect 2 DLC Stolen Memory Review

by

EA has finally decided to stop playing nice and start releasing DLC for Mass Effect 2 that you actually have to pay for. Damn. Ah, it was fun while it lasted. So now that we have to put down some hard-earned cash (560 MS points or $7) for some extra added gameplay and a new character, the old question returns: is it worth it? Well I suppose it is ironic that Kasumi happens to be a thief, because it feels like someone just made off with my money.

During this episode you have to meet up with Master Thief, Kasumi Goto, who explains to that her partner-in-crime transcribed some secret information onto a memory box but was killed by the James Bond-esque villain Donovan (Muhahah!) Hock who now is trying to unlock the box and acquire the precious goodies inside. Luckily, Donovan (Muhahah!) Hock is throwing a party, and Kasumi managed to get you an invite. What follows is a little bit of everything that Mass Effect 2 has to offer: battles with mercs, battles with robots, and Michelangelo’s David’s stolen wang. I mean a gunship.

Kasumi, as a partner, is also pretty great. Her Shadow Strike ability, which warps her behind an enemy, cloaked, then stabs them in the back before returning, is pretty awesome. But that ability and decent story on their own doesn’t make the pack worth the seven bucks you need to drop down to get it. For those who don’t know, Mass Effect 2 revolves around recruiting characters like Kasumi by finding them in one mission then earning their loyalty with another. Stolen Memory has only one mission, which basically means that it is both the recruit and the loyalty mission in one short package. While the story of Kasumi remains interesting and even a little touching, getting to the end will take you roughly an hour at best. After recruitment, Kasumi will stow herself in one of the observation decks. You will be able to talk to her about her trophies from past jobs that she took part in, but, like Zaeed, another downloadable character, she won’t be much for speaking to, only offering to quickly talk about a past job or something random and uninteresting. That is no good in my opinion.

Now, don’t get me wrong, the pack is not terrible by any means. But it just is not worth the initial price. Wait for this one to go down a little before picking it up.

Score: 7.8/10.0
