Bayonetta is a third person action games developed by Platinum Games and the creator of Devil May Cry series Hideki Kamiya. Don’t think this is simply Dante in female form Bayonetta brings her own game to the table and sets it self apart from the Devil May Cry series.
You play as Bayonetta, an Umbra Witch who awaken after being asleep for 500 years along with memory loss to go with it. The story isn’t the highlight here and thankfully the game is so damn fun it doesn’t matter. But the cutscenes are extremely over the top showcasing her sex appeal and her crotch but you’ll get a kick out of it.
Bayonetta’s arch-enemies are none other then angel. These are not your usual angelic beings the character designs range from towering giants to ships firing missiles. I love the designs in this game and each new encounter is always quite the spectacle.
But to the most important part how those Bayonetta play? To answer that question unbelievably naughty. Bayonetta is fast and controls perfect. Any mistake in performing combos comes from human error this game is as precise as it could be. Since her costume and attacks are made from her hair you’ll be seeing a lot of skin in combat and it is a cool effect especially when combined with weapons you found in the game.
Witch Time is the ability you’re going to need to master if you want survive in this game. Dodging at the last second enables Witch Time which slows everything down around you while you remain in normal speed allowing you to perform damaging combos you probably wouldn’t be able to otherwise. Once you get the hang of Witch Time you’ll feel just as badass and unstoppable as the main character herself.
When your magic is filled she can perform Torture attacks which often then not will kill an angel in glorious fashion. Its quite entertaining to see the different kinds of Torture attacks she can perform and something you’ll love doing over and over. There’s a small alchemy feature to make items as well as accessory to equip to give you more advantages in battle.
A pleasant surprise to me was the level of difficulty present in the game. Aside from Very Easy and Easy which uses and automatic mode for newcomers and gamers not particularly good at these kind of games Normal to Non Stop Infinite Climax will truly test your skills. On Non Stop Infinite Climax Witch Time is disabled so you should be able to understand how difficult the game can be but it not a cheap kind of hard mastering her arsenal you can take on anything.
I didn’t care for some of the mini-games present like Angel Attack which annoys me because of how crappy it responds. The others control pretty badly too but you only play them in certain chapters unlike Angel Attack which is played every time you complete a chapter.
What shines in Bayonetta is the boss fights. Each boss fight is unique, challenging, and seeing what hair monster she summons next to finish them off is always entertaining and brutal. She may be sexy but brutality comes hand in hand with her.
It took me about 15 hours on my first playthough and I didn’t unlock half of the content in this game. As of writing this review I’ve put in over 40 hours, got a platinum trophy, tons of weapons, costumes and still have things to unlock. I wish more games came with this much content.
Unfortunately there is a difference when playing the Xbox 360 and PS3 version of the game. While Platium games handled the 360 version they left the port of the PS3 version to Sega and they sort of dropped the ball on the part. The PS3 version looks a bit more washed out and has a bit more slowdown in certain parts but that never that ruins the game as they run just about as smooth as each other. The long load times is the most annoying factor in the PS3 version as loading always occurs when you press start, pick up items, die, etc.
I would still encourage you to pick up the PS3 version if that’s your only system or system of choice since none of these issues takes away from the awesome gameplay but for the best performance the Xbox 360 version wins that battle. Sega should have done a lot better on the port and Platinum Games should have made sure both versions released in identical shape
Bottom line I think this is an action game you must play this year. Pick this up for your system of choice and have a blast playing it.
