WCG's Ultimate Gamer Hits Airwaves Tonight

Posted by

Tonight marks a night of culmination for a lot of people. World Cyber Games, of course, but also the legions of gamers that believe that gaming should be a mainstream phenomenon. That’s why The Ultimate Gamer is such a big deal.

The fact that it’s premiering on SciFi says tons as well, but that’s something for another day…

Here’s what the official site has to say about the show:

In WCG ULTIMATE GAMER, 12 top gamers from around the country live together and battle one another in a series of competitions that take them “beyond the game.” From real-life challenges inspired by top-selling games to head-to-head elimination matches before hundreds of screaming spectators, the last gamer standing after eight grueling weeks will have survived gaming’s ultimate test and will be called the best all-around gamer in the United States.

The prizes are also pretty major. Take a look:

  • $100,000
  • The ultimate Samsung electronics package
  • And the opportunity to be the face of the WCG, where they will represent the world’s largest video gaming organization around the globe, including the 2009 Grand Final in China

I don’t know about you, but I find this show pretty interesting. Now, the real-life challenges are kind of unexpected, but they’re not exactly a bad thing.

It premiers tonight at 10pm Eastern /9pm Central on SciFi.

What do you think? Will you be checking out The Ultimate Gamer?

Yeah.. I hate to say it, but you KNOW some of the female "contestants" are executive plants to raise ratings. Not saying that it doesn't work.. I want to watch it now, lol. But I remain suspicious until I see the episode. Film-room editing can hide a lot.

This seems a lot like that Gears 2 promotional contest SciFi ran before the release. It still looks promising though.

After seeing the first episode, I'm slightly hooked. The dialogue is pretty bad with the hosts, but oh well. It's gaming on tv, how can we not watch?
