Gears of War 2 Countdown Goes All Out

Alright, we all know it’s coming. It’s Gears of War 2 – anyone who isn’t aware of this one just doesn’t like games in general, so I think it’s safe to say that it’s a guarantee for my collection before I give any more details about the awesomeness to come.

I’ll own it and play it tons.

With that out of the way though, it’s time to know why a lot of Gears heads have been getting so excited lately. Since it went gold, gamers have been counting down to Gears of War 2’s release, and because it’s such a major occasion, fans and retailers alike have begun to do some special things for the upcoming blockbuster:

Midnight Mayhem Events

20,000+ stores worldwide will place Gears of War 2 on sale at 12:01 a.m. on November 7th to kick off the Midnight Mayhem launch program. Anyone who buys a copy of Gears 2 at one of these locations will receive a token redeemable over Xbox LIVE for an exclusive in-game gold-plated Hammerburst Assault Rifle to frag with online.

Xbox LIVE Weekend, Nov. 7-10

Microsoft is doing some great things with Xbox LIVE, as there will be “Game with Fame” events that allow gamers to challenge the Gears of War 2 dev team at Epic Games for prizes. I’m sure if you whomp on enough devs, you’ll probably get a bit of fame as well!

If those events aren’t exactly your bag, and you’re looking for plain old content, we have a bit coming our way:

Flashback Map Pack and Xbox LIVE Gold Trial Membership

Anyone who purchases Gears of War 2 at retail will also receive a redeemable Xbox LIVE token to download the Flashback Map Pack for free. This map pack will be available over Xbox LIVE day and date with the launch of Gears 2, and contains five of the most popular maps from the original Gears of War:

  • Canals
  • Gridlock
  • Mansion
  • Subway
  • and Tyro Station

Not only are these levels available free of charge to retail buyers, but they’ve been given a Gears of War 2 upgrade. Also, each copy of Gears 2 will come with a free 48-hour Xbox LIVE Gold membership.

Gold-Plated Lancer Rifle

If you get the Limited Edition of Gears 2, you’ll get a free Xbox LIVE redeemable code for a gold-plated Lancer assault rifle.

Get Started with Gamerscore

Gears of War 2’s developers will give up gameplay hints, tips, and insights in a series of exclusive interviews with the Gamerscore Blog team, and will be available to Xbox LIVE Gold members on launch day.

All in all, it sounds like there’s a ton of gooey, gooey, goodness being thrown around for Gears of War 2. If the title lives up to it’s predecessor, which it’s looking to do – and then some, all the fanfare will be well deserved.

Here’s hoping I’ll get to frag with you on Gears of War 2 when it releases on November 7th!
