Beware: Xbox Live Phishing Scams Are Reality

Since the dawn of the internet, there have been people interested in nothing more than swindling away others’ property. Unfortunately, in such a connected world, people always find new ways to try. In recent times, the phishers have become a bit more sophisticated.

Now, they’re gunning for your Xbox Live info.

DeaconBlade, a good friend of mine, recently talked about the Xbox Live phishing that goes on. Apparently, the son of one of his acquaintences recieved a message from a user that was offering him 5000 free Microsoft Points. All he had to do was give up his Xbox Live login and password.

Not too long afterward, he found dozens of unauthorized charges on his credit card. Having seen this first hand, he wanted to get the message out to gamers everywhere and suggest that users be wary of messages from anonymous users, especially the following.

Examples of potential hacking messages

  • Hey I know a way to get free Microsoft Points for you. I just need personal information.
  • Do you want (insert awesome game item)? I can get it for you. I just need personal information.
  • I can give you an easy 1000 Gamerscore. I just need personal information.
  • I work with Xbox or Xbox Support. I just need personal information.
  • Go to (some website link) to get free points. Just sign up with your personal information.

Seriously, everyone, this is not a topic to be taken lightly, and I second everything that DeaconBlade mentions.

Giving out your Xbox Live info to a stranger is no different than handing your credit card out to a random person you meet on the street. Sure, the purchases will be smaller, but they could pile up a lot quicker than you might expect.

Be safe with your personal info, and never ever give out your personal information to someone online. Stay safe.
