Grand Theft Auto IV Locking Up

Lame, News, PS3, Rockstar, Xbox 360

For a game like Grand Theft Auto IVGrand Theft Auto IV reviewsGrand Theft Auto IV reviews, this is not the kind of news you want to hear. Apparently both versions of the game for the PS3 and Xbox 360 are locking up.

We don’t know how severe this problems is since a lot of people are playing this just fine. Many different forums and blogs are complaining about this so we can’t just ignore this either.

Rockstar needs to jump on this immediately. This won’t stop the game from selling but people waited in line for the midnight launch to go home and have game constantly freeze is no good.

Again Rockstar better fix this ASAP.

After watching my roomate play GTA 4 I get a 360 and the game. Only problem its locking up in the intro sceen.

If anyone hears about a patch or fix for 360 it would be appreciated.

Put me down for a 360 lockup as well. Didn't start really becoming a problem until about 25 hours of gameplay, now it happens at random. Got a RROD which seems to have caused even more random hangups in GTA4. Never had the RROD before.

Thinking PCs are still the best gaming platform, but for some reason certain game companies have tethered themselves to these bricks called gaming consoles.
  • PS3 owners should have less problems due to the recent patch R* released. I'm unsure about 360 owners, but if I find something out, I'll let you know here!

Just had my first 360 GTA-IV lockup. But it happened mid-game while driving. It was like the car was inside a mime box, walls in all directions. And none of the menus would open, including xbox dashboard. Had to restart.

Since I first posted I have tried to start the PS3, then quickly move over to ensure the unit has connected to the internet. Only then do I start GTA4. Since I've been doing this i have played for about 6 hours (on several different days) without a lock-up. Maybe I'm just lucky, but please let us know if this works for someone dead in the water.

Disconnecting from the net doesn't fix the problem. Played the first 3 or 4 missions then it started locking up. Put in all the "fixes" including updating the PS3. Now it won't get to the first scene. Have deleted everything, powered down, you name it. This is very disappointing especially since I was really getting into the game when it crashed.

Easy solution to this, just goto your Network options and disconnect from the net. The game is trying to get on the station online and it's holding it up for some reason. Just get off the net and load the game, easy as could be.

I have the x360 version. I initially thought my game was DOA when it froze, and returned it. Got the new copy, and it locked up at intro just as before. The controllers even stopped responding, even when GTA wasnt in the system, so I was concerned that the game had done more to my system than simply lock it up. Deep breath, pulled the PSU and (not that it affects anything) the video/audio input. started the unit again- controllers worked. skipped the intro and have been playing 2 hours since without issue.

    for what it's worth...

I've had the game one day and it's frozen up twice. The first time i had to shut of my PS3 as nothing else responded. When I tried to start again, it would not finish loading. Simply ending the game caused a re-boot of the whole system. When powering back up I went to the "Saved Game Utility" before GTA4 loaded and deleted the latest save point. Then the game ran, but I lost a lot of progress. After that the entire system would re-boot whenever i just tried to quit the game. Now it's frozen again. I deleted the latest save. And now it won't load the save before that. Back to COD4, which works and works. (GREAT game BTW) This was fun at first, now I'm just waiting for the re-load, which is slow when it does work.. This game is not ready to be sold, Period. They need to respond very quickly, or refund my money. I have never had any issue like this with any other game. Very dis-appointed.

Yep... just tried to play the game with internet disconnected... worked like a charm - but now i cant use the cell phone which means no cheats and such... well i guess we're up to using about $50 of the $60 bucks.

Just bought the game, put it in my ps3 and it will not get past the "STARTING A NEW GAME" screen... this pisses me off to no end. I can't even see the game I payed $60 for!? WTF... wtf...

Guys same happened to me, today it would just sit there at the loading screen and never load. I got it working by disabling the internet connection.

I forget what forum that fix came but after disabling the internet it loaded up and plays fine.

Let me know if this works for you guys and I'll post the fix on the site.

I have the 80gb PS3 and played 8 % though. Turned the game off and went to bed. Woke up the next morning, turn on the ps3, inserted GTA IV and it loads up the main screen, but when it loads up the saved point, it just locks up, doesn't never load. I went ahead after waiting for 30 minutes to see if it will ever load and it never did and deleted ALL of the files off of the PS3 that had GTA4, shut down the PS3 turned it back on, loaded the game again and it just hangs at "Starting a new game"..........$60.00 dollars for a game that I can't play... This sucks......Any suggestions??????????

I played it this morning on my 40gb ps3 and now this afternoon, it just sits at the loading screen. Annoying.

I googled "gta locking up" because my game is locked up! 20% into the game I decide to load multiplayer.. requires system update.. I ran the update.. and now my game freezes the second it starts!!!!!!!!

nothing I can do to unfreeze it.. looks like im gonna loose all my game saves??? (if i re-install??)

    any ideas..???
  • Moonie69
Well sucked in guys, im in Australia and mine works perfectly! HAHAHA!
  • I didn't purchase Bully (despite the fact that I was looking forward to it for quite some time) because of the issues it had. Depending on how long it takes to get GTA4's problems fixed, I may pass on this one as well. I'd rather see the games get delayed and work properly when they ship rather than purchasing it and dealing with the frustration of a sub par and frustrating experience.

Sorry to hear this guys. Bryan I heard about the online being down then I heard it was fixed I will try it myself when I get the chance.

I know the PSN is not the problem since I had no problem playing the MGO beta.

Rockstar better get this under control.
  • Bryan
I'm having the lock up issue on PS3, and I am also having an issue with trying to play online. I cannot play the game online over playstation network at this time
  • Mike
