GDC 2008: Square-Enix Announces Crystal Tools

Taku Murata, general manager of Square-Enix’s research and development division announced the cross-platform engine Crystal Tools.

Crystal Tools was formerly known as the White Engine which is being used for games like Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII. While this engine was known for being designed exclusively for the PS3 it actually was built to design for the Xbox 360 and PC as well.

Murata confirmed that a version of Crystal Tools will support the Wii in the future. A new MMO that Square-Enix is working on willl also use Crystal Tools.

Final Fantasy XIII and Versus shows just what Crystal Tools can put out. I can’t wait to see what else they have in store to use with this engine.

  10. This is getting a little bit more subjective, but I much favour the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more sparkle, and some cool characteristics such as ‘Mixview’ which let you speedily see related cds, songs, or other users related to what you’re hearing. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, permitting you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, tunes, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also excellent fun, letting you come across others with shared likes and becoming buddies with them. You then can listen to a playlist developed based on an combinations of what all your friends are playing, which can be enjoyable. Individuals concerned with privacy will probably be relieved to learn it is possible to prevent the public from seeing your individual listening routines in the event you so decide on.
