GDC 2008: Sony’s Free PhyreEngine

This is something that should ease development. Sony announced yesterday the PhyreEngine, a free graphics engine. This engine provides:
- Run time
- Art pipeline & tools
- 70+ samples and full documentation
- Example game templates - full source code and artwork
More importantly this designed for cross platform development (PS3 & PC) and optimized for multi-core. It also has OpenGL, Direct3D and simple recompile for the PS3.
Games like DiRT, flOw and Gripshift used this engine and Sony is promising ongoing development and support for the PhyreEngine. More details on the PhyreEngine should be discussed later today.
This is definitely good news for developers. The PS3 is harder to develop for then the other consoles and making things easier means better games and less delays, especially for multi-platform games.
