PS3 to Outsell 360 in ‘08? EA certainly thinks so

Some gamers may find this news as a shock - especially those who aren’t very big into the PlayStation 3 - but Electronic Arts expects the PS3 to outsell the Xbox 360 this year.
Yes, they’re serious about that.
It’s expected that the PS3 will sell 5-6 million in Europe and only 1.5-2.5 Xbox 360s in the territory, while even in the US it’s expected that the PS3 will outsell the 360 by 3.5 million consoles. Craziness.
While they never really go into why they expect the PS3 to sell those kinds of numbers, I believe it may have something to do with a couple of major factors:
Price Drops
The recent price drop on the PlayStation 3 not only brings it in the price range of the Premium Xbox 360, but it’s also the cheapest Blu-Ray Player on the market. That kind of deal is hard to pass up for some people, especially tech enthusiasts. That actually leads into the next factor…
Blu-Ray
You now have a home gaming console on the market for a mere $20 more than it’s competitor that has the added benefit of the now-dominant high definition disc standard. You can get an Xbox 360 with an HD-DVD drive for just over $460 after tax, but you can’t beat the package for $399.
They’re actually pretty thorough in their estimation. EA’s estimates for home console sales in 2008 are:
- Nintendo Wii: 12-14 million
- PlayStation 3: 9.5-11.5 million
- Xbox 360: 6-8 million
- PlayStation 2: 3.9-4.9 million
The battle for the best console just got a little bit better…
