20GB and 60GB PS3s cut from Sony Japan

Live in Japan and looking at getting a PlayStation 3? You might want to get it now, because January will see the final shipments of the 20GB and 60GB PlayStation 3s to the marketplace.

For the unaware, there are a few differences between the various PlayStation 3 models.

  • 20GB
    • Has both the Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer from the PlayStation 2
    • No external slots for memory cards
    • No Wi-Fi
    • Four USB Ports
  • 60GB
    • Has both the Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer from the PlayStation 2
    • External memory slots
    • Wi-Fi
    • Four USB Ports

Moving forward, the systems sold will be the 40GB and 80GB models:

  • 40GB
    • Has no backwards compatibility with PlayStation 2
    • No external memory slots
    • Wi-Fi
    • Two USB Ports
  • 80GB
    • Graphics Synthesizer from PlayStation 2
    • External memory slots
    • Wi-Fi
    • Four USB Ports

As you can see, the primary difference between the discontinued models and the current models is the amount of PlayStation 2 hardware in each console.

So if you’re in Japan and looking into getting a PlayStation 3 that can play the vast majority of PS2 games, you might want to get out and get a 20GB or 60GB system.

If you don’t have a PlayStation 3 yet, would the promise of better backwards compatibility lead you to pick up one of the discontinued models?
