Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune Review

What Uncharted brings new to the table is its melee system which is extremely satisfying and easy to pull off. While there are only a couple button combinations Drake pulls off different combos each time with my favorite being a couple of hooks and jabs ended with a kick to the nuts. You have your Fast and Furious combo by pressing Square five times to finish them off.

The Brutal Combo is a bit trickier. By timing your button presses just right which are Square, Triangle, Square punishes the opponent. Doing this successfully you earn double the ammo they drop; fail and they will punch you in the face and leaves you open for other attacks.

The Gunslinger Combo lets you punch them once with square, press R1 to shoot them and square to finish them off with one more punch. Have a shotgun equip and that’s bye bye pirate.

There are also Stealth Kills if you can run up behind someone and press Square for some neck breaking action. You can also soften people up with gunfire and run in for a dropkick or flying punch.

Naughty Dog only used the motion controls for log balancing and when throwing grenades. It doesn’t take long to get used to throwing grenades either and becomes rather intuitive.

With combat out of the way platforming plays its part as well. With so many people quick to compare this to Tomb Raider the platforming is really the only thing they have in common. Uncharted keeps it a lot simpler with you not having to have that perfect angle to jump (by pressing X) to other places which Tomb Raider is good for. Drake grabs ledges automatically too with the only hard thing to do sometimes is find the right way to go.

I thank Naughty Dog for this approach because this keeps the game fun keeping frustrations levels minimal. Uncharted could have used some harder puzzles though. You use Sir Francis diary to solve puzzles which you will never break sweat but this goes for Naughty Dog approach of keeping the game fun, not frustrating. If you take to long a hint pops up guiding you in the right direction.

Playing Uncharted couldn’t be more fun but it’s the story that really pulls everything together with probably the best graphics on any console to date. Uncharted plays out just like a movie with the cast more then likable. Each character is portrayed perfectly with some of the best voice acting to date. You’ll actually care what happens to these characters.

The animation is another part where Uncharted shines. Drake moves fluid and has a real sense of weight. You’ll see a lot of different animations throughout the game especially when ducking behind cover since Drake has many different poses. The technology behind this is truly amazing.
