Folklore Review

Both characters have an HP (hit points) and MC (mind capacity) gauge. Each Folk you use depletes the MC gauge, some Folk use more then others. When using Ellen it takes couple of seconds for your MC gauge to refill if you use it all. When you’re not attacking or defending the MC gauge is always refilling.

Keats is a bit different after you stop using Folk for a while his MC gauge always fills to the top immediately. Keats also has another gauge called a TP gauge; once it’s filled he goes into his Transcendence form. Transcendence is a transformation where Keats becomes incredible powerful. He can create explosions and attack using properties of Folks you have assigned but it doesn’t last long. Absorbing ids raises the TP gauge.

Ellen and Keats will find different Folk when they visit the realms and use the same ones differently. This hopes to take away some of the repetition for them having the exact same realms to go too. I don’t think it much of a problem but its worth mentioning.

Fighting with the Folk is very good but there are times with a lot happening on screen the framerate takes a hit. It’s nothing that’s going to break the gameplay and it doesn’t happen too often. With the variety of Folks available a lot of the fun is going to each realm and capturing Folks to use. Also with the variety of Folks you can create your perfect team for the right situations.

One department I was worried about was the story and I’m glad to say that the story is a bit better then I hope for. The main draw is still the Folks but there are plenty of twists and turn to the mystery of 17 years ago. Some actions you take as Ellen or Keats affects the other story and their actions. Playing as both characters really helps the story too since their motives for visiting the Netherworld are quite different.

Folklore is a must have for PS3 owners and they probably don’t know it. Game Republic created a beautiful world and good battle system with best motion controls out right now for the system. Topped off with an engaging story Folklore is a experience you shouldn’t miss this year. I only wish this game had got the hype it deserved so more people would have known about it. Folklore is probably the first gem that might be forgotten for the PS3.
