RUMOR: Microsoft Creating a “Home”?

News, Rumor, Xbox 360, Xbox Live

I would’ve never expected it, but you never know – it’s possible!

It seems that Microsoft’s GM for the Entertainment and Devices division – the same division that holds the 360 and Zune – made an odd statement at a virtal worlds converence in Austin recently that raised quite a few eyebrows.

Daniel Schiappa, the GM in question, said the following at the conference:

“by next year, you’ll probably know more about why I’m up here.”

Even further extending the cryptic statement, it is reported that Schiappa hinted that Microsoft may be entertaining thoughts of a virtual world that could span across the gaming, PC, and mobile devices they currently offer. Schiappa noted that if such a project would come to fruition, it would start on PCs, then make it’s way to the other platforms…

Sound familiar?

Keep in mind that this is a rumor, so take it with a grain of salt, but the fun about this one is that it’s not all that implausible. Not only would it douse the flames of the console war, there’d be a “virtual world” sub-battle going on that could push both Microsoft and Sony to make their virtual world better than the opposition’s.

Any way this rumor fleshes out, it’s good for gamers, so I say bring it on!
