Fifa 08 Hands-On Impressions

Fifa 08 - Wii

For the Wii version of the game, our presenters were Tim Tschimer and Jamie Toghill, Group Producer and Lead Designer.

This, as some say, is where the magic happens! The team working on the Wii edition of the game focused on creating a game that both hardcore and casual gamers could love, and the proof is definitely in the pudding.

There are two control schemes: Advanced and Family. Advanced controls are for traditional gamers, as they use both the remote and nunchuck, with the nunchuck handling player movement and the remote giving ball and action controls. Family control is based on just the wiimote, with movement being taken care of automatically and the player only controlling passes, shots, and tackles. That makes it a bit easier for casual gamers who don’t game much, older gamers, and hardcore gamers who might just happen to have a beer in their free hand…

As far as modes go, there’s the traditional gameplay you’ll find on other versions minus the manager mode, online one-on-one matches, and a Wii-specific mode called “Footii Party”.

Footii Party is what someone half a millenia ago might have called the “bee’s knees”. It has three gametypes: Table Football, Juggling, and Boot It. Table Football is a game of foosball, Juggling is a time-sensitive movement game based on juggling a ball (as far as time-sensitive goes, think Elite Beat Agent except with Wiimote gestures and buttons), and Boot It is a mode based on penalty kicks with targets.

Each of the gametypes is extremely fun, can support up to four players, and only needs the wiimote. Boot It is particularly fun, which is likely why we spent most of our Wii time playing it!
