Who Won E3 This Year?
Daniel (Double D) David: I think Sony won E3 this year with Microsoft second and Nintendo last. I think Sony did everything right showing games coming this year and what we can expect in the future. Microsoft line-up is also very solid but the majority of games we already knew were coming and didn’t show anything to look forward too beyond that. They seemed to ride the Halo train a bit to much in my opinion. I’ve been trying to get into Nintendo but it not really happening for me. I’m going to pick one up for games like Metriod Prime and Super Mario Galaxy but I don’t see to much of a future for Nintendo and these mini-game type stuff is really getting to me. The hardcore gamer in me feels as if Nintendo is ashamed of me and they find a son they truly love which is the casual audience, makes me cry a little.
D’Juan “DeejayKnight” Irvin: I have to agree with Dan here. E3, in my opinion, is not just about games coming out this fall and winter, it’s about games that will be out by the next E3 conference. In that regard, Sony wins by leaps and bounds. I can name a bunch of PS3 games that aren’t coming out this year, but I highly anticipate: Infamous looked awesome and I want to know more about it, the Final Fantasy games and Metal Gear Solid 4 are mandatory purchases in my book, and White Knight Story looks just as awesome. Let’s not even get into the PSP titles and integration with the PS3. WiFi connections to my PS3 from anywhere to stream content? Count me in.
Microsoft came strong, as expected, with games that are releasing this year. They also played it safe, which nets them second place. I can understand not announcing the big guns coming out later on, but I’ve got to have some assurance that I’ll be seeing games past 2007. Halo 3 is going to sell consoles any way you look at it, and Mass Effect will do the same as it’s riding the coattails of Knights of the Old Republic. How can they best their previous work? Easily, and I want it right now. Ubisoft is giving the 360 loads of exclusives like Naruto and my personal favorite, Splinter Cell: Conviction. It’s going to be a great year for Microsoft, and as a 360 owner I can’t wait until this fall. I just don’t know what to expect from 2008 other than Resident Evil 5.
Nintendo is doing what they seem best at this generation: capturing non-gamers and bringing them into the fold. Wii Fit will very likely break that fitness market and bring in loads of non-gamers into the console. Their high-sellers like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Metroid Prime: Corruption, and Super Mario Galaxy will bring back gamers from the ’90s with relative ease, considering the price of the Wii.
All in all, I think it was an awesome E3 this year, and I can’t wait to see what’s coming in 2008. If we’re getting games the quality of those we’re seeing in the first two years of the new-gen, I can’t wait to see what the second half looks like. After playing all the awesome games, of course!
