Manhunt 2 rated Adults Only, Nintendo and Sony Won't Allow It

Yesterday Manhunt 2 received a preliminary rating of Adults Only from Take-Two. Nintendo confirmed that if a game is rated AO then it will be released on the Wii or any of Nintendo’s systems. Sony confirmed this as well.

“Games made for Nintendo systems enjoy a broad variety of styles, genres and ratings. These are some of the reasons our Wii and Nintendo DS systems appeal to such a broad range of people. But as with books, television and movies, different content is meant for different audiences. That’s why the ESRB provides ratings to help consumers understand the content of a game before they purchase it. As stated on Nintendo.com, Nintendo does not allow any AO-rated content on its systems.”

“It’s currently our policy not to allow the playback of AO-rated content on our systems,” said a Sony spokesperson.

I feel bad for Rockstar and Wii/PS2 owners who planned on picking up Manhunt 2. Rockstar is going to have to appeal to get it M-rated or modify it somehow to get it approved for the masses. Even though this game isn’t being released on the Xbox or Xbox 360 Microsoft has also said that don’t allow AO-rated games either.

It sucks that grown folks that were interesting in buying the game cannot since every platform doesn’t allow AO-rated games. I don’t approve of this decision but the game wouldn’t sale as much since some outlets don’t sale AO-rated games anyway. Sucks to be Rockstar and sorry adults, your not allowed to play this game, I don’t care how old you are.

That is the weakest of sauce. I can understand Nintendo’s stand.. they ARE Nintendo after all. But 360 and PS2 are higher class consoles, more in the realm of adult games. As such, AO content should be available. It’s no different than television really, there’s a broad range of rated content on tv, and it’s the parent’s responsibility to restrict access to AO type content, not the entertainment industry’s.

This announcement is kind of a sad realization for the console world of gamers, in my opinion.

    @ Mike

I think problem is Nintendo, Sony, and MS don’t want the kind of publicity for having such a game AO-rated on their console. Adult gamers wouldn’t mind but parent how by this stuff for kids wouldn’t have it and then as soon as sometime bad happends their going to blame the game and console it was available for.

The game industry is a business after so they have a image to keep.

The gaming industry is so screwed up at the moment. What a scenario where children are allowed to watch violent movies on tv and play violent games because the parents are idiots.. and it’s parents who do the blaming.. and better still, it’s only the games they blame. It could be a violent game based entirely on one movie, and the parent would let them watch the movie, but complain about the game.

i remeber that nintendo did have an amazing game that was NC-17….the South Park game on the 64 LOL. friggin. shooting turkeys at aliens. that was actually a pretty good game if i remember right haha. but i could see why manhunt would bring a problem to the sytems seeing as how its pretty much just brutally hacking and slashing your way out of danger.
