165,000 PS3s sold at UK launch – Breaks Sales Records

Looks like the PS3 has set record launch numbers in the UK. The game heats up as we speak…

The figure is three quarters of the total 220,000 UK launch stock for day one, and makes PS3 second only to PSP in the overall launch weekend sales stakes. The Sony handheld shifted 185,000 in its opening weekend back in September 2005.

PS3’s record-breaking debut for a home console comfortably beats the previous top seller Nintendo Wii, which sold 105,000 after its frantic launch weekend in December last year. Fellow format rival Xbox 360 racked up an estimated 70,000 at launch in December 2005.

Well, it seems that price isn’t as big a deal in the UK as everyone seems to have made it out to be, becoming the fastest selling console in the region and all.

Now comes the real test – can they keep the momentum they have? The summer lull is always a time for lackluster sales – by no fault of gamers, of course. This Christmas season could very likely decide who the big dog of the console wars ends up.

Who’s placing bets?

Breaks Sales Records huh? Well maybe it should be more careful next time…

Do you have the sales figures for the US?

You can never really trust these sales figures only because in the US I know at least half of the people in line were there only to resell the console on eBay which failed and many were returned a month later and put in cages because they came from the wild. Very aggressive beasts by nature. The poking, prodding, and name calling did help either.

Maybe people in the UK just really like Blu-ray? It sure in hell isn’t the game library that’s getting them excited…

I’m giving the console a year of growth before even considering dropping a pound on it’s shiny swollen casing.

I don’t know the specifics of the people buying their PS3s, Eric, but It wouldn’t surprise me to find out that some shoppers had eBay in mind. Then again, it also wouldn’t surprise me to find out that everyone that bought one did so because of the fact that it’s a PlayStation.

The reasoning behind things isn’t always apparent immediately, but if I remember correctly, eBay auctioneers from Europe and the UK weren’t even breaking even on their attempts at a sale.

If more news about it is released, i’ll gladly post it here. Thanks for your comment!
